The Arc Carroll County is hiring School Bus Assistants to work part-time, for 10-months during the school year.
In this important position, you will assist the school bus driver on your assigned route, as well as provide support and supervision to students with disabilities as they are transported to and from school.
BUS Assistant

Essential Functions:
1.
Assist students boarding and exiting the bus.
Place and secure safety devices, seat belts and wheelchair tie-down systems as needed for the safety of the students.
Lift and place children into car seats and secure as necessary.
2.
Check student attendance.
Know students and bus route in order to assist a fill-in driver.
3.
Provide intervention, assistance, and support to students while in transit.
Assist students in developing appropriate relationships with peers and in developing acceptable social behaviors.
4.
Evacuate students from bus safely when required.
5.
Attend all meetings, pre-service and in-service training required by The Arc and Carroll County Public Schools.
6.
Maintain a good rapport with bus driver, students, parents, guardians and personnel of the public school system and The Arc.
7.
Other duties as assigned.
o Must meet all requirements for school bus assistants as required by the Carroll County Board of Education and the State of Maryland.
o Ability to make appropriate decisions in emergency situations.
o Ability to memorize route in order to assist a fill-in driver.
o Complete pre-service instruction requirements (Special Needs training, etc.
).
o Clean drug screen and criminal record as The Arc provides programs, services, and direct care to vulnerable adults.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1.
Ability to lift/manipulate at least 50 pounds frequently with ability to lift, carry and/or exert force (push/pull) in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally.
2.
Ability to withstand prolonged periods of sitting and frequent bending, stooping, reaching, pulling and pushing required:
Including lifting a wheelchair and repositioning an individual.
3.
Ability to transfer individual from a wheelchair to bus.
Ability to physically secure individual in a wheelchair to the bus with tie-downs.
4.
Ability to participate in evacuation drills, including jumping out of the back of a bus then assisting children to exit.
